Advanced Surgical Procedures for the General Practitioner: Skin & Reconstructive Surgery

This course covers principles of flap creation and clinical use, with detailed instruction and lab practice on reconstructive surgeries such as pinnectomy, nosectomy, and mastectomy. Advanced techniques for thoracic wall injuries and digit reconstruction, including amputation and phalangeal fillet, will also be taught. Participants will gain confidence in using various flaps for reconstruction and will leave with a strong understanding of flap usage and reconstructive surgical techniques.
ABOUT THIS COURSE
During this course, instructors will focus on both the principles of flap creation and the clinical use of these flaps. Additionally, the performance of specific reconstructive surgical procedures such as pinnectomy, nosectomy, and mastectomy will be described in great detail and performed by participants in the laboratory. More advanced reconstruction techniques utilized during thoracic wall injury (eg. rib fractures, diaphragm advancement) as well as digit reconstruction procedures such as amputation and phalangeal fillet will also be discussed and performed in the laboratory. Lastly, attendees will comfortable with many different flaps that can be used for reconstruction during their surgeries. At the end of this course, participants will have a strong understanding of the principles of flap usage, the types of flaps that can be used for different surgical diseases and how to perform many reconstructive surgical techniques.
Learning Objectives
1. Principles of flap usage in companion animals will be described in the lecture and demonstrated in laboratory sessions as well as be performed by attendees.
2. Attendees will be comfortable with several flaps used for the reconstruction of head and neck procedures as well as alarplasty techniques for dogs with brachycephalic airway syndrome.
3. Attendees will practice pinna removal and removal of the nasal planum in dogs and cats.
4. Attendees will perform mastectomy procedures.
5. Advanced reconstruction techniques of the diaphragm and chest wall will also be demonstrated and performed by attendees.
6. Attendees will be able to practice digit amputation, phalangeal fillet technique and tail amputations.

PACKING TIPS
- Scrubs are available upon your arrival if needed.
- Closed-toe shoes are required during labs.
- A light sweater for indoor areas.
- Plenty of sunscreen.
- Electronic charging device to power up.
- Valid ID - We highly recommend you carry your ID at all times in Las Vegas.
TRANSPORTATION DETAILS
- Airport Pick up: Available on request, 24 hours, 7 days a week. Please contact the hotel at once you've retrieved your luggage, and your hotel will let you know where to wait for the shuttle.
- Transportation from your hotel to the Harry Reid Airport: You will need to sign up at the front desk. These shuttles run once an hour. They will ask you to sign up no less than 2 hours before expected departure.

Viticus Group transportation includes shuttle pick-up at the Residence Inn 45 minutes prior to the start of your course start time and a short ride to the Viticus Center. At the close of each day, our shuttle will take you back to the Hotel.
Last Day Transportation: Shuttle provided both to the airport, and back to the Hotel. (Luggage storage available on campus)
If you are a Las Vegas local, or are driving yourself to the course, please arrive to the Oquendo Campus 30 minutes before the start time.

Public transportation in Las Vegas is limited.
If you are staying somewhere other than our preferred partner, you will need to arrange for your transportation to and from the Viticus Center. If you are renting a car, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, and several other hotels on the strip may charge for parking. Other transportation options for getting around are taxi service, Uber and Lyft.
